A private cannabis association in Barcelona does not operate like a shop or a venue open to the public. It is an entity formed by members, with shared rules and governing bodies responsible for collective decisions and day-to-day administration. That distinction is more than vocabulary: it shapes how the organisation is governed, how applications are considered and how information about the people who contact it is protected.

This article explains that internal architecture without offering legal advice. Every association has its own statutes and circumstances, while the wider legal context can change. If you need the basic definition first, read what a Cannabis Social Club is. Here, we look behind the door.

The statutes provide the common framework

Statutes describe an association’s purpose and establish its fundamental rules. They commonly organise matters such as who may apply, the rights and duties of members, how meetings are called and which bodies represent the entity. They are not decorative paperwork. They help ensure that decisions can be understood and do not depend on improvisation.

The Catalan Government’s official model statutes show the usual structure of an association. They do not describe Club Guru specifically and are no substitute for reading a particular entity’s own rules, but they illustrate why the name, purposes, governing bodies, admission, departure and finances should be set out in writing.

Assembly and board: deciding is not administering

The general assembly brings the members together and sits at the centre of the association’s collective will. The board, meanwhile, administers and represents the entity within the powers provided by law, the statutes and assembly resolutions. The Catalan Government explains this distinction in its official association guidance.

In practice, mature governance leaves a record: documented resolutions, defined responsibilities and criteria that can be explained. It also avoids presenting the association as one person’s property or as a business serving customers. The community decides; elected bodies carry out those decisions and remain accountable.

Admission is a process, not a purchase

Requesting information or submitting a form does not automatically make someone a member. The association must be able to check whether an application fits its statutes, internal rules and the community’s actual capacity. It helps to separate three stages:

  1. The interested person checks the current conditions through an official channel.
  2. The association receives and reviews the request under its internal criteria.
  3. If appropriate, admission is formalised and the rights, duties and house rules are explained.

There is no promise of acceptance or immediate access. Current conditions and the correct route are maintained on how to join, which should take priority over screenshots, directories or old messages.

Privacy starts with the first contact

An application may contain identity and contact details. The association should explain why it uses them, collect only what is necessary, protect access and keep them only for a justified period. The Spanish Data Protection Agency describes data protection by default as minimally intrusive processing: less data, less reach, limited retention and restricted accessibility.

Discretion does not mean opacity. A responsible association provides a clear privacy notice, identifies the data controller and offers a way to exercise data-protection rights. Before submitting information, verify through the official channel that the notice is current and applies to the form you intend to use.

Signs of a well-kept association culture

  • Statutes and internal rules have a real operational purpose.
  • The responsibilities of the assembly and board are distinct.
  • Admission is reviewed; it is neither sold nor guaranteed.
  • Communication avoids the language of shops, menus and customers.
  • Personal data is collected with a defined purpose, limits and safeguards.

These elements help you assess an association by its structure and conduct rather than its promises. For the wider Spanish context, see our guide to cannabis clubs and the law in Spain. For Club Guru’s current conditions, always use the official membership page. Belonging to an association begins with understanding it.
