In brief
A THC percentage expresses the measured proportion of a compound in a sample. It is not a universal score for intensity, quality or experience. Two samples with the same percentage may differ in other compounds, and two people may respond differently.
Spanish and European official sources do support a cautious conclusion: high-potency products, particularly when combined with frequent or long-term use, are associated with a greater risk of problems. That does not predict what will happen to one person or establish a “safe” threshold on a general website.
What a THC percentage measures
An analytical result expresses a proportion in the tested sample and depends on:
- which compound was measured, such as THC or THCA;
- the formula used to report “total THC”;
- the method and laboratory;
- the portion of the sample analysed;
- moisture, storage and date;
- the uncertainty and limits of the test.
Figures should not be compared without knowing their units and methods. A result from one sample should not be applied to every sample sharing its name.
Potency is not quality
A higher figure does not prove better provenance, greater purity, better storage or a preferable experience. Treating THC as a ranking of “best” or “premium” removes useful context and can encourage a riskier interpretation.
Analytical quality requires an identified sample, controls, a method and complete results. Responsible communication does not turn that evidence into a recommendation.
What effects can THC produce?
The Spanish National Plan on Drugs describes possible changes in perception, memory, coordination, attention and emotional state. Intensity and duration vary. Higher doses may be associated with anxiety and other adverse reactions, but a general page cannot anticipate an individual response.
This guide provides no dose, waiting time or technique for intensifying or reducing an effect. Anyone experiencing severe symptoms, loss of consciousness, chest pain, difficulty breathing or immediate danger should seek emergency help; the general emergency number in Spain is 112.
High potency and risk
The Monografía sobre Cannabis 2025 identifies potency, assessed through THC concentration, among the factors associated with a greater likelihood of cannabis use disorder. The European Drug Report 2026 also highlights risks linked to a more diverse supply, high-potency extracts, synthetic or semi-synthetic cannabinoids and adulterated products.
The careful wording is “associated with greater risk”, not “inevitably causes” a particular outcome. Frequency, age at first use, mental health, combining substances and other circumstances also matter.
THC and driving
Spain’s Directorate-General for Traffic warns of altered perception and attention, slower reactions, drowsiness and a false sense of security. Article 14 of the Road Traffic Act prohibits driving with drugs present in the body. Its exclusion for substances used under medical prescription and for therapeutic purposes applies only when the driver is fit to use the vehicle with the legally required care. Article 379.2 of the Criminal Code separately addresses driving under the influence; the applicable classification and consequence depend on the facts. A prescription is not automatic permission to drive. Do not drive after cannabis use.
How long do the effects last?
A percentage cannot reveal one universal duration. Route, amount, composition, metabolism, tolerance and context all contribute. Giving a single figure could create false reassurance, especially before driving or another safety-critical activity.
How to assess a potency claim
Before accepting “high THC” or “very potent”, ask:
- Is there an identifiable analysis?
- Which sample and date does it cover?
- What exactly was measured?
- Is uncertainty communicated?
- Is the figure informing the reader or promising an experience?
